So like I say, those two flashlights are only the latest of countless attempts by the authorities to interrupt the progress of train-hopping drifters—or maybe they’re part of drift itself. Just as long waits and uncertain departures seem inherently a part of drifting, in that one can be soundly adrift while forced to stand still, it seems to me that being pulled off a train is as much a part of train hopping as riding one. In both cases it is not only uncertain movement that defines drift but uncertainty itself—even uncertainty as to whether the movement will begin or continue. Likewise, it’s not just drifters’ uncertain movements that shape them as drifters but their willingness to embrace uncertainty on its own terms. Back in Fort Worth, Zeke had told me of a punk/folk band that I really must check out: This Bike Is a Pipe Bomb. So I did, and what I heard was this very ethos, played out in songs like “Trains and Cops”:
